With constant, efficient and timely work rhythms, the construction work of the 1st Phase of the project “Improvement / Upgrading of the Ayia Napa Beach Front”, which started immediately after the deposit of the foundation stone on 21 November 2016, continues without any particular problems. It is expected to be completed by the end of May 2018.
As it is known, the first section of the project includes a pedestrian walkway, cycle path, docks, platform for events, playgrounds / playgrounds, endemic flora gardens and urban equipment. Next, and before the end of the year, a new competition will be launched to complete the Project. The new section includes, among others, stadiums, international standards, beach volley and beach soccer as well as a unique for our country skate park. At the same time it is planned to create parking spaces as well as public sanitary facilities.
In this phase, the construction company GiovannisLtd has undertaken the implementation of the project. The first part of the project, totaling € 3 million, is part of a total of € 6.5 million. The aim of this grand project of Urban Planning is stressed by the Mayor Mr. Yannis Karousos, the rational integration and organization of the entire coastal front, creating hospitable spaces for social and sports activities for recreation, recreation, sport and relaxation, which will be enjoyed by both visitors as well as our citizens, as well as the aesthetic, qualitative and socio-economic upgrading of our city and the wider region.
He also thanked the President of the Republic and the Government for recognizing Ayia Napa’s contribution to the economy of the place and made progress in the announcement of the project in 2015 and today we are delighted to see this very important project for our city being implemented
On November 29, 2016, the Environmental Authority issued a positive opinion on the project, but with a negative opinion on the construction of the two docks due to the negative impact of their construction and operation on the marine environment, namely the reef with Vermetous species and Cystoseira. Both the spatiometer in the two docks and the proposed construction and operation (Vermetous piling, lighting etc.) were judged to negatively affect Vermetous species.
Our Municipality, in an attempt to prevent the protected species from the project, has submitted a new Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (PEPP) with suggestions for changes to the site, in a way that greatly avoids the influence of Vermetous species, and suggestions are made for new methods of piling to ensure that the rocks that host the species are not crushed.
The illumination is also modified in a way that emits less light and upward and only for the time it will be necessary. Also, at the request of the Environmental Authority, an Ecological Assessment Study and Description of the Marine Substrate of the Areas to be constructed will be submitted.
The suggestions submitted by our Municipality have been accepted by the Environmental Authority so the Municipality will proceed with the construction of the two docks, giving the users of the pedestrian street access to the sea without the existing accident risk due to the rocky rugged landscape of the beach which extends along the entire length of the coastal front.
